Union County Sheriff’s Office on lockdown after resident attempted to surrender live hand grenade

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — The Union County Sheriff’s Office locked down its administration building late Thursday night.

A resident attempting to surrender a live hand grenade prompted the lockdown, according to the sheriff’s office.

A local explosives team was heading to the building to safely remove the grenade.

Deputies said a safety perimeter had been established, and there was no immediate danger to the public.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident is active and ongoing.
