Union County fourth-grader wins district-wide spelling bee

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Do you ever have trouble spelling simple words like “dodecahedron?”

Not to worry, a Union County student named Emanya Sibu can help. She participated in a district-wide spelling bee on Tuesday.

Sibu is a fourth-grader at Indian Trail Elementary School. She out-spelled both elementary and middle school students, taking the trophy home.

She said she was inspired after seeing her older sister win the school competition three times in a row.

Sibu not only participated in a district-wide competition, but she was also the first Indian Trail Elementary student to win the district and go to regionals.

“Our school has never won the district and never gone to regionals, so that kind of was a tiebreaker for that streak. It was a kid that kept on winning for the district, and I broke that streak,” said Sibu.

Sibu is now preparing for the regional spelling bee that will be held at Bank of America Stadium. The spellers in this bee will compete for a spot at the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
