MONROE, N.C. — Union County Commission Chairman Stony Rushing died on Tuesday, family said. He was 51 years old.
“We regretfully share that Chairman Rushing passed away this evening after a courageous battle with health issues over the past year,” county officials said in a news release. “We were hopeful he would make a full recovery, so this certainly is a difficult time.”

Rushing served on the board of commissioners since 2014. He also ran for Congress in the 9th Congressional District.
“Chairman Rushing loved Union County and was passionate about serving this community,” the county said. “His contributions to Union County have been immeasurable and will leave a lasting impact.”
