Union County asks citizens for input to make intersections safer

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Union County is asking the public what repairs and safety improvements are needed for intersections.

The county posted an interactive map online where you can identify problem spots and leave your opinions.

It’s creating a list of the top 15 critical intersections to improve.

“We are trying to make sure the projects we do commit to are the ones that are broadly supported and will deliver long-term benefits,” said Bjorn Hansen, the senior planner for Union County.

The county doesn’t maintain or own roads but the survey can help advance local and state projects that are priorities and can possibly provide funding.

Hansen said they’ve gotten a lot of feedback on roads leading to the South Carolina state line, and intersections around Hemby Bridge, Cuthbertson, and New Town roads, as well as state Highway 601 and U.S. Highway 74 in Monroe.

Hansen says it could make a difference.

“People are really affirming their frustrations,” Hansen said. “They can also say, ‘I don’t know why you are doing this.’”

The county said about 1,400 people have provided input.

There hasn’t been much of a response from communities including Marvin, Monroe, Mineral Springs, Wingate and Marshville.

The survey ends Friday.

There’s a section on approved projects, which you can still give feedback on.
