MINT HILL, N.C. — An investigation is underway in Union County after a neighbor said he found a racial slur written in the snow near his home.
In the image below, Channel 9 has blurred the photo sent to us by the homeowner, Roscoe Trotman. He said this is where he saw the slur carved in the snow on the road last weekend.
“It just brought back memories of what we have gone through as a people. That word should not be acceptable. It’s just not acceptable,” Trotman said.
Trotman said his family has lived in the Mint Hill neighborhood for 13 years and right now they’re the only Black family living in their cul-de-sac.
He said his neighbor is the only one that called the sheriff’s office once they made the discovery.
“I don’t use it, and I don’t want anyone else to use it. And if I could, I would eradicate the word from the whole English dictionary,” he said.
Deputies with the Union County Sheriff’s Office said a 16-year-old who was visiting the area is responsible. They said they’re working to determine if they will file criminal charges against the teen.
The sheriff’s office also released a statement saying, “Sheriff Cathey and the Union County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate or condone insensitive and deplorable activity like this in our community.”
No other details have been released at this point.
