UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Union County leaders made a final vote, 3-2, Monday night, to not add fluoride to the water at their newest plant.

During the first vote two weeks ago, dentists argued adding small levels of fluoride promotes healthy teeth and prevents decay.

“The best day is when we get to tell kids and parents, they don’t have any cavities,” said Dr. Noah Menaker, a pediatric dentist. “And a huge part of that is fluoride.”

The Fluoride Fighters, on the other hand, asked commissioners to go against the science. They believe fluoride poisons the public and they should have the choice whether or not to have fluoride in their water.

“I don’t consent to adding fluoride to my water,” said one of the opposers.

Monday night’s vote needed a simple majority to pass.
