On Aug. 6, Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Jarrod McCraw shared a safety and security update at the Board of Education meeting.
This year, UCPS is using body scanners at events, starting with home varsity football games.

“We’re adding one additional layer, and that was at the recommendation of law enforcement, which are body scanners,” said Dr. Andrew Houlihan, the superintendent for Union County Public Schools.
UCPS officials said they are only scanning the body for one thing: weapons.
“I don’t really know what they really see, but I think the reality is, I want to be safe, and I think everybody else does, too,” said fan Nathan Jones.
A grant made it possible to add the scanners.
The district said school and athletic staff were trained on how to operate them.
“I think it’s a good idea,” Jones said. “I think it’s safe, and unfortunately, this is the new reality of our world.”
In September 2023, a major brawl that broke out near a stadium led to the early shutdown of the Monroe–Forest Hills game.
Police said 25 adults, students, and non-students were part of it.
“To me, all the incidents were just ridiculous, little silly unnecessary things,” said Mary Ann Wright, a grandmother.
It spoiled the fun for a lot of innocent people.
“I just like coming out and supporting the school and my grandson,” Wright said. “It’s something fun to do on a Friday night.”
She was happy to see that security was ramped up Friday night to get into the Cuthbertson High School stadium during the game against Parkwood High School.
“I think this is good that they stepping up security because you want everybody to be safe,” she said.
The district will continue to conduct regular security assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Each school will use a visitor management system to enhance monitoring and manage campus visitors.
Along with the additional safety protocols, the following measures will continue to be in place:
- Clear bag policy: only clear bags no larger than 4.5″ x 6.5″ are allowed.
- Adult supervision: elementary and middle school students must be accompanied by an adult.
- Ticket sales: all ticket sales end at the beginning of halftime or the mid-point of events.
UCPS has assigned a school resource officer to every campus.
“These SROs, in partnership with local law enforcement agencies such as the Monroe Police Department, Stallings Police Department, Union County Sheriff’s Office, and Waxhaw Police Department, play a crucial role in maintaining a secure learning environment,” UCPS said.
“During the school day, we’re really doubling down on many strategies that we’ve employed for the last seven to eight years. Our buildings are hardened; we have video doorbell systems in place,” Houlihan said.
