Two permanent beehives coming to Uptown Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — Bee Downtown, a company based in Raleigh, will install two permanent beehives in Uptown Charlotte by the end of the month.

The hives will be in a courtyard next to the 24-story Carillon tower on West Trade Street. The two hives can hold up to 100,000 bees and produce about 66 pounds of honey.

These are the first hives on an office building in uptown. Bee Downtown has placed hives at two other locations outside of uptown in Innovation Park in northeast Charlotte and Fibrix Filtrations on Tar Heel Road northwest of uptown.

The Ritz-Carlton on East Trade Street isn’t associated with Bee Downtown, but the hotel keeps bees on the roof and uses the honey for some cocktails and menu items.

Bee Downtown has put beehives on 70 buildings across the Southeast since 2015. The company hopes to help sustain a diminishing honey bee population in the U.S. and teach employees lessons on environment management and teamwork.
