CHARLOTTE — A man is in custody after a shooting in southwest Charlotte Wednesday afternoon that left two people seriously injured, police say.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said it happened just after 4 p.m. on the exit ramp from Interstate 485 Outer to South Tryon Street.
MEDIC said two people were taken from the scene to be treated for serious injuries.
According to CMPD, Anil Dabydeen was driving along Interstate 485 when he shot at another vehicle following a dispute. Court documents stated that gun was stolen.
Two people inside the car that was shot at were then hit by gunfire, according to CMPD.
Officers said a short while after they located Dabydeen’s vehicle, a pursuit began.
Dabydeen was eventually taken into custody in a southwest Charlotte neighborhood, according to CMPD. Court records show he’s charged with possession of a stolen firearm by a felon, assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a weapon into occupied property and going armed to the terror of people.
Channel 9′s Glenn Counts spoke with neighbors who said they heard commotion right outside their front door.
“I was on a conference call, and actually I heard first the helicopter overhead and then I heard the police cars flying by. I got up and said to my wife, ‘Are the doors locked downstairs just to be safe?’ And she said, ‘Yeah, they are,’” said resident Will Awad.
Resident Maleah Freeman said she was also at home when police flooded the neighborhood.
“Well, they had him against the car. And I saw all these police cars and helicopters and Channel 9 news. I saw everything; it was crazy,” Freeman explained. “He was cooperative; he was very cooperative. He got out of the car, and he put his hands against the car.”
CMPD is still working to determine what led to the initial shooting.
