Truck backs up to trailer hitting, killing man underneath at north Charlotte business, investigators

Officers responded to the parking lot of 701 Atando Avenue.

CHARLOTTE — A 45-year-old man died after an 18-wheeler hit him while he was underneath a trailer Friday in a north Charlotte parking lot, investigators said.

At about 8:40 a.m., officers responded to the parking lot of 701 Atando Avenue because of a report of a wreck involving a pedestrian.

The driver of the truck was dropping off a trailer at the location.

After detaching it, the driver moved the truck to the other side of the business to attach another trailer.

Jose Danilo Guerra-Mejia was removing a security device from under that trailer when the truck driver backed up to it.

Guerra-Mejia was struck and taken to Atrium Health CMC with life-threatening injuries, where he died.

Investigators said the truck driver did not know the man was underneath the trailer.

No charges were filed.

Speed or impairment were not factors, and the investigation remains active.
