Troopers: Mother, son killed; 2 children hurt in Lancaster County crash

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — Troopers said a mother and her son were killed, and her two other children were hurt Saturday in a crash in Lancaster County.

The single-vehicle crash happened just before 3:30 p.m. on Highway 341 near Monarch Place.

Officials said the driver, 30-year-old Heather Martin, was traveling southbound before hydroplaning and running off the right side of the road. The SUV then struck an embankment and overturned before hitting a utility pole and a tree.

Troopers said Martin was not wearing a seatbelt and ejected from the SUV. Her 3-year-old son, who was sitting in the back of the vehicle, also was also not wearing a seatbelt and partially ejected. Both were confirmed dead at the scene.

Authorities said Martin’s two other children, who were riding in the rear of the SUV, were airlifted to a hospital in Columbia. Their injuries are unknown at this point.
