IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal wreck Tuesday night on Interstate 77 in Iredell County.
At approximately 8:00 p.m., troopers said a 2000 Ford F150 was traveling north in the HOV lane on I-77, failed to reduce speed adequately, and collided with a 2016 Toyota Scion that had broken down and was stopped in the HOV lane.
The Ford then spun out of control to the right and struck a 2014 Ford Escape also traveling north, according to troopers.
Trooper said the driver of the Scion, 47-year-old Misty Leigh Shook, died at the scene. A passenger in the Scion was transported by EMS to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, in critical condition.
The driver of the Ford, 48-year-old Bret Edward Shove, was transported to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver and passenger in the Escape were not injured.
Troopers said an initial investigation indicated impairment as a contributing factor in the crash. Shove has been charged with driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed, and other traffic violations.
Upon a completed investigation and consultation with the Iredell County District Attorney’s Office, additional charges may also be filed.
