Trio charged following ‘takeover-style’ bank robbery in South End, sources say

CHARLOTTE — Police charged three people following a bank robbery Friday morning at a Bank of America branch in Charlotte’s South End neighborhood, sources told Channel 9.

According to police sources, the branch at the corner of Iverson Way and South Boulevard was held up in what was described as a “takeover-style” robbery, where the suspects were armed with rifles.

It doesn’t appear that anyone was hurt, and police could not say how much money the thieves got away with, if any, but they didn’t get far.

Not long after the bank was robbed, officers spotted the suspect vehicle turning into a nearby neighborhood and the suspects trying to switch cars. Police tried to stop the vehicle, but the suspects led authorities on a short chase before they crashed at the dead-end of Spruce Street.

Officers said the suspects attempted to cross Interstate 77 but were taken into custody a short time later.

Channel 9 Skyzoom saw police and an ambulance along I-77 near West Boulevard. Not far from that scene, our crews could see more officers in a nearby neighborhood.

Around 10:30 a.m., Channel 9 was there as police brought the three suspects to CMPD headquarters, one by one, for questioning.

Sources confirmed that the men were the suspects in the bank robbery, and none of them said anything as they were led into the building in handcuffs.

Police charged Kendell Alexander, 57, Steven McCory, 36, and Derrius Fleming, 30, with armed robbery with a dangerous weapon.

CMPD said it was not looking for anyone else connected to the crime.

A takeover robbery is when the robbers are professional thieves who work in teams, according to the Credit National Association.

Robbers may be highly aggressive and intimidating.

Customers were turned away from entering the bank as it remained closed while police investigated.

No injuries were reported.
