CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Pete Guelli remembers Carl Scheer as a gentleman. A been-there, done-that executive who nonetheless displayed near-infinite humility. Near being the key word.
Guelli, the former Charlotte Hornets chief operating officer who is now a New York Giants executive, called CBJ Saturday as news spread that Scheer had died Friday night, three hours before he would have celebrated his 83rd birthday.
Scheer will be buried in Greensboro on Tuesday morning. A memorial service will be held Wednesday afternoon at Temple Beth El in Charlotte.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marsha, and his two children, Bob and Lauren.
Scheer suffered from dementia during the final years, but, before that, he played a pivotal role making Charlotte a major-league sports city.
