CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A tree fell, striking an apartment building and several cars and injuring one person Thursday morning, Charlotte fire officials said.
The tree fell at the Sharon Arms Apartments at the intersection of Colwick and Chiswick roads.
Fire officials did not say how extensive the injuries were and are in the process of removing the tree from the building.
One resident of the complex said his roommate called him about the fallen tree. His roommate told him he was walking near the stairwell when the tree fell.
The man said his roommate was lucky and suffered only minor injuries.
Other neighbors described what they heard from inside their apartments.
"I was inside the house. Actually, I was looking out the window and all of the suden I heard this big boom and I thought it was the guy emptying the dumpster but I felt the ground shake a little bit. And when I opened the door and looked out I saw this tree fell on everybody's car," Mike Thompson said.
Firefighters said the building itself is safe and people we be able to stay there.
The city's arborist said the amount of rain in the Charlotte metro lately would not have caused the tree to fall, concluding it likely had other problems.
In west Charlotte, part of a tree crashed down on the home of an elderly woman.
Medic said the woman was inside the home at the time the tree fell. They checked her for injuries.
