IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — One person was killed after a tree fell on their car during severe weather Sunday morning in Iredell County.
It happened around 10 a.m. on Landis Highway near Teeter Road, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol confirmed to Channel 9.
Officials say that during the heavy rain the victim’s truck was hit by a falling tree.
The victim has been identified as Matthew Ronald Teeple, 70, of Cleveland.
The road was shut down in that area for approximately 4 hours.
Highway Patrol officials say that neither speed or impairment contributed to this crash.
Troopers say Landis Highway will likely be closed for an “extended time” while an investigation takes place.
The accident happened while a storm brought high wind gusts to Iredell County, according to Severe Weather Center 9. A tornado warning was issued around the same time as the reported accident.
