Town of Waxhaw wants NCDOT to take closer look at speed limits, safety near schools

WAXHAW, N.C. — There’s a push to slow drivers down near two Waxhaw roads, Kensington Road and Cuthbertson Road.

The Town of Waxhaw is asking the North Carolina Department of Transportation to study the area, and consider lowering the speed limit to 35 miles per hour. Not just in front of the school, but a stretch of Kensington Drive from Millbridge Parkway to the state line.

Amy Oswald lives in the Millbridge neighborhood, next to Kensington Elementary.

Both are along Kensington Road, which is 45 mile per hour.

She says she worries for her daughter, who is a new driver, exiting the neighborhood at the intersection due to how fast cars go, and blind spots.

“We do have a light coming to Kensington and Millbridge Parkway, and we think reducing the speed coming into that light will also enhance the safety in that intersection as well,” said Waxhaw’s Mayor, Robert Murray.

Murray says their request to NCDOT to lower the speed limit on Kensington Drive is a proactive approach by the town to improve road safety in front of all schools.

He says they’ve also engaged the towns of Weddington and Wesley Chapel to have NCDOT study Cuthbertson Drive from Providence Road to New Town, due to changing speeds near the middle and high school, and library.

Oswald believes the changes near her home could make a difference.

“I think a traffic light and lowering the speed limit would definitely help getting out the neighborhood safer and pulling into the neighborhood,” she said.

NCDOT told Channel 9 they got the request from Waxhaw. They say the roads are on their list to investigate, adding they had not been studied recently. They said last year on average 12,000 cars traveled Cuthbertson road daily, but did not have counts for Kensington Drive.
