WINGATE, N.C. — Tractor trailers are continuously getting stuck at a major railroad crossing through downtown Wingate.

Signs are posted off Main Street to alert drivers of low ground clearance, but each time, first responders said it is a race against the clock to make sure there isn't a crash in the area.

"We had one recently that they were able to get it stopped about a quarter mile from hitting the truck and that's not a whole lot of distance. We actually had to evacuate town hall because we were worried if there was a derailment," Town Manager Patrick Niland said.
