CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officers are investigating after a toddler was hit by a car in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte and seriously injured, CMPD sources say.
The crash happened just after 9 a.m. Tuesday in a townhome community on Calloway Glen Drive off Carowinds Boulevard.
The child's grandmother said she and the boy's mother were trying to change the 2-year-old and his twin brothers' diapers when he ran out of the house and was hit by a car.
The grandmother, Angie Eakle, claims the driver ran a stop sign in the complex.
"There's a stop sign right there. They never stop at the stop sign," Eakle said. "We have speed bumps. I don't understand how she could have gotten that much momentum to do that kind of damage."
Eakle said the boy's mother took him to the hospital after the collision but he was later flown to Levine Children's Hospital.
"HIs little pacifier was all crushed into pieces in the road, and his flip flops," Eakle said.
Neighbors said they saw the woman who they believe was driving the car after the crash and described her as "very upset" and "shaking violently."
Witnesses said the woman left the complex but eventually came back and was seen speaking to police.
"What if that was my kids when they were two, like, I just couldn't imagine anybody leaving a scene like that," witness Megan Youmans said.
The child has some broken bones and is in stable condition.
Officers told Channel 9 they are continuing to investigate the crash.
Residents said drivers often speed through the neighborhood, regardless of the speed bumps, and run stop signs.
