CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Just a week after the NBA All-Star Game, another major basketball event in Charlotte is about to tip off.
The CIAA Tournament officially began Monday, when Johnson C. Smith University takes on Chowan University at the Bojangles Coliseum.

Thousands of fans will be in town this week to cheer on their teams, and there will be plenty of events happening during the tournament.
2019 CIAA Events at the Charlotte Convention Center:
Wednesday: High School Education Day
Thursday: Career Expo
Saturday: Fan Fest and High School Step Show
The tournament brings millions to the local economy, but some controversial and sometimes violent parties have also come with it.

Last month, the CIAA announced the tournament is leaving the Queen City and heading to Baltimore starting in 2021.
The commissioner said Charlotte's bid to keep the tournament was competitive, but Baltimore offered more scholarship money and low hotel rates.
