MATTHEWS, N.C. — A developer who has discussed bringing a community of tiny houses to west Charlotte has acquired more land in the area while questions still remain about the fate of his first project.
An entity affiliated with Kelvin Young, Keyo Park East LLC, acquired several lots in Matthews’ Crestdale neighborhood earlier this year for a total of $920,500 in four separate transactions, according to Mecklenburg County real estate records. The lots are largely noncontiguous and include parcels along Crestdale Road, Matthews School Road and Charles Street.
Young’s first project, Keyo Park West, created a buzz when thousands of people came to the open house on Cathey Road last summer. Tiny-house living, popularized by TV shows and minimalist trends that have become en vogue in larger cities, hasn’t yet taken hold in a meaningful way in Charlotte.
But the development, save for the model home that sold earlier this year for $92,000, has not yet gotten off the ground. That’s despite an unknown number of prospective buyers who put down a $4,000 lot-reservation fee late last year to begin working with a designer on a future home in the community, which had been expected to break ground earlier this year.
