Tides reveal remains of 100-year-old shipwreck along North Carolina beach

SURF CITY, N.C. — History has been uncovered along the North Carolina coast. Tides have washed away the sand to reveal the remains of a shipwreck in Surf City.

WWAY obtained photographs from a beachgoer on Tuesday a few hours after high tide along North Topsail Drive.

The wood is actually the remains of a shipwreck more than 100 years old.

The tides in Surf City pushed away enough sand to expose what is left of the William H. Sumner.

The schooner ran aground in 1919. It was 165-feet long when it went down.

Locals say the tides usually expose unique discoveries like this a few times a year.
