CHARLOTTE — A nationwide hack has exposed thousands of students and teachers in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, according to BleepingComputer.com

The breach, which involved the PowerSchool system, possibly compromised students’ names, contact information, dates of birth, limited medical alert information, Social Security Numbers, and other related information, according to PowerSchool.

BleepingComputer.com first reported the breach and said it impacted 467,974 students and 57,486 teachers in CMS.

PowerSchool informed North Carolina public schools and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction about the cybersecurity incident on January 7.

PowerSchool is offering free credit monitoring to those impacted by the breach, with notifications expected to be sent out by the end of January.

PowerSchool became aware of the incident on Dec. 28, 2024, about an unauthorized exportation of personal information through one of its community-focused customer support portals.

“We have no evidence that other PowerSchool products were affected as a result of this incident or that there is any malware or continued unauthorized activity in the PowerSchool environment,” PowerSchool said in a statement.
