CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two men and a 16-year-old boy have been charged after a woman was shot to death inside a car Tuesday evening at a Charlotte shopping center.

It happened just after 5 p.m. on West Sugar Creek Road near Mallard Creek Road in Derita.

Officers said they were called for reports of an armed robbery in the parking lot of a shopping center. When they got there, police found 27-year-old Katie Eckerd in a parked car. She had been shot.

She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

Police said some sort of altercation led to the shooting, and that there were two other victims in the case, but they are both expected to be OK.

On Wednesday, police said they had arrested 22-year-old Marquez Williamson, 25-year-old Bricard Washington and a 16-year-old boy in connection with Eckerd’s murder.

Williamson, Washington and the teen have been charged with murder, three counts of attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

The teen was also charged with three counts of malicious conduct by a prisoner.

The shooting death was the second homicide that happened Tuesday. CMPD said the violence has to stop.

“We’ve got societal systems that are ground to a halt or working on a partial basis, you know?” Maj. Ryan Butler said. “Courts aren’t working at full capacity. Jails are limited on what they can do. Magistrates are limited on what they can do, so it’s beyond any one single member or system in society. But what I need is for everybody to not be OK with this. I need the city of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County to be upset. I need them to say ‘This is not okay.‘”

Several people have been detained and police are not looking for additional suspects.

A motive has not been released.

This is an ongoing investigation. Check back with wsoctv.com for more information.
