Thieves pry into drop boxes to take rent checks, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officers are investigating a string of thefts at four apartment complexes in south Charlotte.

Police said the crooks pried their way into drop boxes on the properties, stealing envelopes renters had filled with their monthly payments.

The crimes weren't discovered until Thursday, when people started getting late notices.

When Eyewitness News showed Ashwin Dhurve the police reports, he was shocked. He said he's lived here for years, and never had a problem.

"That's really gutsy for people to do that. I don't know why they do that," Dhurve said.

Officers are increasing patrols and reminding people not to pay in cash. They are also suggesting that complexes make their drop boxes more secure.

Dhurve said he will change the way he pays to a draft from his banking account online.

"I'm not going to do the drop box if that happens," he said.
