CHARLOTTE — These Charlotte-area restaurants served customers for the last time in 2022, a year that saw the food and beverage industry continue to adjust to challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The owners of Taproom Social in uptown and Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit in South End both said that their businesses were never able to fully recover from Covid-related issues, leading to their closures. Chef Paul Verica also cited effects of the pandemic as he made the decision to close The Stanley in Elizabeth this spring after a four-year run.

Though, not all of the closures were directly tied to the pandemic.

Soul Gastrolounge in Plaza Midwood, a staple at the corner of Central and Pecan avenues, closed in August after its owners faced a big rent hike and possible sale of the building where the restaurant was located. Their other food concept in the same building, Sister, also closed. The goal is for Soul to reopen in a new location in 2023.

In many cases, spaces left behind by shuttered restaurants didn’t stay vacant for long. The owners of Crepe Cellar, for instance, closed that NoDa establishment in January — but opened an Italian concept in the same space in March.

Bocado Bar + Diner closed in May after a short run in South End, but was quickly replaced by a new concept; Coaltrane’s Char Grill closed this fall in Plaza Midwood, but the space was immediately snapped up by Que Onda Tacos & Tequila; Local Dish, which closed in downtown Fort Mill in May, will be home to FM Eatery early next year; and Alton’s Kitchen & Cocktails in Cornelius has been rebranded as Peninsula Prime Seafood & Steakhouse.

In some instances, restaurants that closed in their current location are relocating to another spot. That includes Midnight Diner, which is moving from South End to uptown, after being displaced by development.

CBJ has a roundup that provides a look at which establishments the Charlotte area has lost this year. Check it out here.
