CHARLOTTE — A Myers Park High School freshman tried to protect a woman who was being attacked, but the assailant turned on him.

"I don’t know if I would have gotten away, I don’t know if that would have been me,” said Jennifer Joyner, who was the initial victim.

Joyner said she was trying to leave her boyfriend’s apartment when she was attacked.

The 15-year-old student was beaten in the face with a table leg and taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

“I’m heartbroken,” said Joyner. “I’m heartbroken. I feel worse for him than I do for myself.”

She was at the apartment in South End when the fight with her boyfriend started.

"He was throwing a big metal heater at my head,” Joyner said. “All the boy said was, ‘Hey man, stop doing that. That’s disrespectful. You’re disrespecting her.’”

Police said Miguel Sanchez caused so much damage to the teen, the boy has to have facial surgery.
