Minister says community needs to help police solve series of shootings in neighborhood

ROCK HILL , S.C. — There have been at least three shootings within six months in a Rock Hill neighborhood.

The latest crime happened on Wednesday when Rock Hill police said a 19-year-old was shot in the back on Rich Street on the south side of the city.

Two other shootings were reported on the same street in November. There have been no arrests.

Jeanette Chisholm, a minister at a community church in the area, said the violence is disappointing.

She wants the community to start reporting what they see and hear to the police.

“The problem is we don’t get involved,” Chisholm said. “We see things happening. We see crimes happening and we don’t get involved. You see somebody shooting somebody. You see somebody fighting in the streets. You need to notify somebody.”

Chisholm said that she hopes young people who are caught up in a life of crime and violence will realize there is a better way.

“I want them to know there is a way out and there is hope and they do have a future because Jesus lives and once they come in contact with Jesus, they will never be the same,” said Chisholm, associate minister at Higher Heights Outreach Ministry.

Chisholm also wants the police to be more engaged with the community.

Channel 9 asked police how often they’ve responded to that area for crimes over the past three years and if they’re trying anything new to crack down on violence.

The 19-year-old victim who was shot on Wednesday was taken to the Piedmont Medical Center for treatment and is expected to recover.
