CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Abigail McGaha, a 17-year-old Myers Park student, pleaded guilty and was sentenced Thursday for a Charlotte car wreck six months ago that killed her friend Alex Mundt.
"What I really want I can't have and that's Alex back," Lynn Mundt, the victim's mother, said.
Mundt was one of three family members who read statements in court to McGaha.
When the judge asked if McGaha had anything to say, she apologized.
She was originally charged with felony involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.
Police estimate she was driving more than two times the speed limit when she lost control of her SUV and crashed into a tree on Colony Road.
As part of the plea deal, she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
The judge ordered her to serve 10 days in jail, two years of probation and 100 hours community service.
The Mundt family also asked that McGaha complete 60 presentations to local children sharing her tragic story in hopes of educating them on the dangers of reckless driving.
“We really want her to go out and talk about this and to feel what she's done to Alex and to our family," Mundt said.
The attorney representing McGaha said the family didn't want to comment.
