WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — An 18-year-old woman is accused of driving drunk and killing a man near Boone, then leaving the scene of the crash, troopers said.
Dustin Hughes had been with Adam Greer and Tim Watson at a party a mile and a half from the crash.
He said the two decided to walk home when they couldn't get a ride.
The Highway Patrol said two men were walking Saturday morning along Highway 105 when they were hit by a pickup truck that never stopped.
Greer died, and Watson’s condition has not been released.
The pickup truck was found abandoned more than an hour later at a skating rink miles from the crash scene, the Highway Patrol said. It was impounded at the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office after officers found blood on the hood of the truck.
Troopers said 18-year-old Makala O’Brien was found hours later in Tennessee. Investigators believe she got a ride into Tennessee after leaving the pickup truck behind. She was at the party, too, and left shortly after Greer and Watson, troopers said.
"Right when I passed Makala's car, that's when it happened because right when I (saw) them on the side of the road, I (saw) her swerve, and I said, 'Oh, man,'" Hughes said.
O'Brien is charged with DWI and two counts of felony hit-and-run resulting in a death or serious injury.
Court papers said she had an odor of alcohol and red, glassy eyes at the time of her arrest. O’Brien submitted to a blood test several hours after the accident, but the results have not been released.
