Tar Heels, Gamecocks to face off in 2023 Duke’s Mayo Classic in Charlotte

Duke Mayo Classic

CHARLOTTE — The Duke’s Mayo Classic has announced on the Charlotte Sports Foundation website that UNC-Chapel Hill and South Carolina will take part in this year’s game.

The two teams will kick off the 2023 season in the Queen City at Bank of America Stadium on Sept. 2.

The Tar Heels and Gamecocks last faced off in the 2021 Duke’s Mayo Bowl, which South Carolina won, 38-21. This year’s game is a recreation of the first-ever Duke’s Mayo Classic in 2015.

South Carolina has the most wins and appearances in the Duke’s Mayo Classic.

North Carolina Central won last season’s edition of the game over North Carolina A&T State University.

It is unclear when tickets will go on sale to the public.

Tennessee and NC State matchup coming in 2024

The Charlotte Sports Foundation also announced the University of Tennessee and North Carolina State University will play in the 2024 Duke’s Mayo Classic on Sept. 7, 2024.

It will be the fourth time the two teams have played, with Tennessee winning the previous two meetings. NC State played Maryland in the 2022 Duke’s Mayo Bowl, and Tennessee faced West Virginia in Charlotte to start the season in 2018.

“We are thrilled to host a dynamic regional match up that is within driving distance for these two passionate fan bases. Tennessee and NC State have incredible ties to Charlotte and bringing them together to play in Bank of America Stadium is going to be an awesome experience.” said Danny Morrison, CSF’s executive director. “Games like these don’t happen without an amazing title sponsor like Duke’s Mayo, and the support of the universities and our partners.”

The kickoff time and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
