RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities in Rutherford County are looking for the person they said shot at a deputy during a chase late Tuesday night in Ellenboro.
Officials said that just before 11 p.m., a Forest City officer tried to initiate a traffic stop on a blue pickup truck, but the driver would not stop and began leading the officer on a pursuit through Forest City and into Ellenboro.
Rutherford County deputies took over the chase near Ellenboro on Business 74, and a short time later officials said someone inside the truck fired several shots toward pursuing officers.
One round struck Deputy Jeffery Burgess’s windshield. He suffered facial injuries from metal fragments and was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Burgess’s injuries were not life-threatening, and he was released from the hospital overnight.
Detectives are asking for the public’s help as they try to find the truck, which may be displaying North Carolina tag WVM-4712. They think a man and woman were inside it.
Anyone with information about this crime is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 828-286-8477.
