Police: 18-year-old dies in crash after stealing car, leading CMPD pursuit

CHARLOTTE — An 18-year-old died in a crash after police said he stole a car at gunpoint and led police on a pursuit on Sunday evening, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Officers were called around 9 p.m. Sunday to South Tryon Street near Steele Creek Road. A woman told them her car, a 2020 Dodge Challenger, had been stolen at gunpoint near the Publix.

Police shared that information over the radio with officers in the area. Those officers saw a car that matched the woman’s description heading south on Interstate 77 near Carowinds Boulevard.

Officers tried to pull the car over on I-77 near Nations Ford Road but the driver sped off, CMPD said. The driver, who was identified later as 18-year-old Ramon Zavari Miller, led officers on a brief pursuit.

Police said Miller was speeding as he got off the interstate onto Tyvola Road. He lost control of his car while trying to make a right turn and crashed, investigators said. The car flipped several times and Miller was thrown from it.

Miller died at the scene. Authorities believe speeding and reckless driving led to the single-car crash. A toxicology report is pending for Miller.

CMPD said none of their vehicles or officers were involved in the crash.

After an investigation, officers were able to confirm that Miller had stolen the Dodge Challenger in an armed robbery.
