KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — A man involved in an officer-involved shooting in Kannapolis on Saturday died from his injuries two days later, police announced on Thursday.

The Kannapolis Police Department released information on Thursday regarding the shooting that night.

At approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday, a Kannapolis police officer patrolling North Cannon Boulevard saw a gray 2001 GMC Yukon.

The officer recognized the vehicle as driven by a man with an outstanding warrant, so they initiated a traffic stop.

During the stop, the officer identified the front-seat passenger as Edgar Maddison Welch, of Salisbury, who had the warrant. Two more Kannapolis officers arrived to assist. The initiating officer opened the front passenger door to arrest Welch, but he pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officer.

Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Welch did not comply.

Two officers fired their duty weapons striking Welch.

He was taken to Atrium Health Cabarrus and transferred to Atrium Heath Main in Charlotte where he died on Monday.

The three officers involved, along with the driver and a backseat passenger of the Yukon, were uninjured in the incident.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.

The Kannapolis Police Department also confirmed Welch was the suspect in the “pizzagate” shots fired incident in Washington D.C. in 2016.
