HICKORY, N.C. — Monday was the first day of classes ever at Appalachian State University’s new Hickory campus.
The chancellor there said the tuition for some of the students is just $6,000 for the first year.

“A ton of money without having to pay for a dorm and housing,” student Kylee Summerlin said. “Just got everything here and drive.”
The 226,000-square-foot building provides as many as 100 majors. Appalachian State purchased the building for $1 million and then spent $8 million on renovations.
