Student charged after gun reportedly found at Hopewell High School

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — Police and Charlotte-Mecklenburg School officials are investigating after they said a student took a gun to school Wednesday.

School officials said they received a tip that a weapon was brought into Hopewell High School in Huntersville.

A student was searched and a handgun was found.

Officials said the student, 17-year-old Michael Nakiah Spates, is charged with possession of a gun on an educational property.

School officials said the student will also face school consequences.

Hopewell High School officials sent this statement to students' families: "Today at school, we received a tip that there was a student on our campus with a weapon. Our police officers were immediately notified and investigated the tip with school administration. A student was searched without incident and a weapon was located.  The student has been charged by Huntersville PD. The student is also receiving school consequences in accordance with the CMS Student Code of Conduct. I ask that every parent and guardian have a conversation with your student about the importance of making sure they never have a weapon at school.  If a student is aware of a weapon on our campus or any school campus, I ask that they tell a school employee immediately so an investigation can be completed.  I appreciate your support of our school and our students."
