PAGELAND, S.C. — A store clerk in Chesterfield County shot and killed an armed robber Saturday night, the sheriff announced on Monday.
At about 8:45 p.m., deputies were called to an armed robbery at the Highway 9 Mini Mart & Tobacco store on Highway 9 in Pageland, according to a news release. There was a man who was shot to death at the store.
The store clerk told deputies that the man entered the store and pointed a gun to his head demanding money.
The clerk pulled out his handgun and shot the robber multiple times.
Deputies confirmed this happened after watching the store’s surveillance video.
Sheriff Cambo Streater said that South Carolina law states: “A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is attacked in another place where he has a right to be, including, his place of business, has no duty to retreat and has the right to stand his ground and meet force with force, including deadly force, if he reasonably believes it is necessary to prevent death or great bodily injury to himself or another person or to prevent the commission of a violent crime.”
“Sheriff Streater strongly supports the rights of our citizens to protect themselves,” the news release stated.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division processed the scene.
