MOORESVILLE, N.C. — After local families raised concerns about cancer cases in their Lake Norman community, state health leaders now confirm they’ve found higher-than-average rates their neighborhoods.
In April, we reported that Susan Wind raised more than $100,000 to research potential links to thyroid cancer in Mooresville after her teen daughter was diagnosed with the disease.

Channel 9 obtained a copy of a state report that found rates of papillary thyroid cancer in the zip code 28117 were three times higher than researchers expected.
The Department of Health and Human Services said the next step is to get community input to determine whether to study possible risk factors in the area.
