STATESVILLE, N.C. — An armored truck driver was shot Friday afternoon in an armed robbery at a CVS in Statesville, officials said.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom was over the scene on Taylorsville Highway and video showed a Brinks armored truck, crime scene tape, and evidence markers in the parking lot.

Two suspects tried to rob the Brinks Armed Transport employee at about 2:15 p.m. when he was on his way from leaving the store to his truck, police said. The guard returned fire as the suspects drove off in a bronze-colored Dodge Charger.

Customer Karen Goodman has been shopping at the store for 30 years.

“Surprised and I get mad because these are my people,” Goodman said. “I’ve dealt with these people for over 30 years. If anything would happen to them, it would kill me.”

Goodman said the area is usually safe.

“I never did have a problem coming up here after dark,” Goodman said.

The pharmacy was closed because of the robbery.

“I hope they get them,” Goodman said. “We don’t need them doing it again.”

The Brinks driver was shot in the shoulder and is expected to be OK.

There have not been any arrests, police said.

We are asking if other robberies involving armored trucks in the area are connected.
