CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Officials in upstate South Carolina are watching closely as new Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper settles in and begins making changes. The Spartaburg Herald Journal reports leaders there are placing priority on keeping one of that town’s “hottest summer shows.”
In his introductory press conference this week, Tepper, whose nearly $2.3 billion purchase of Panthers closed Monday, specifically mentioned the team's training facilities as one of the top items needing attention. The team has outdoor practice fields at Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte, but its annual training camp in late summer is held at Wofford College — Panthers founder Jerry Richardson's alma mater.
"I can assure you that we're going to make a full court press to try and keep the Panthers right here in Spartanburg," Mayor Junie White reportedly told that newspaper. "It'd be a tremendous impact on Spartanburg if we lose that camp."
Panther officials declined to comment on the camp’s future, according to the report. It notes that connection remain unclear beyond the summer of 2019, when the team’s contract with Wofford College expires.
