Sources: CMPD officer cited for termination for shooting that injured another officer

Gastonia officer shot (WSOC)

CHARLOTTE — Sources told Channel 9 that a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer has been cited for termination for her role in a police shooting last year.

Officers from Charlotte and Gastonia were helping an FBI task force serve a search warrant on Nov. 1 at a home on Oakburn Drive in the Derita neighborhood.

CMPD Officer Heather Loveridge fired her gun, and a Gastonia officer was hit in the arm.

Police never explicitly said it was Loveridge who shot the officer, but they did place her on administrative leave after the shooting.

This doesn’t necessarily mean Officer Loveridge will be fired. Earlier this month, five officers cited for the death of Harold Easter, a man who was in their custody when he died, resigned before they could be fired.

Channel 9 is asking the department for Loveridge’s employment status and we’ll let you know what they say.

There are several steps in CMPD’s firing process.

A review board investigates the case, then recommends a firing. If the police chief agrees, the case goes to a civil service board for review.
