Son accused of stabbing father to death in court: 'I'm sorry mama'

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — A 21-year-old Lincolnton man apologized in court after authorities said he stabbed his father to death.

Nicholas Benjamin Lynch is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 59-year-old Oswald Byran Lynch.

Lynch was stabbed multiple times Thursday afternoon by his own son, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said.

"I'm so sorry mama. I wish it didn't have to be this way," Nicholas Lynch said during his court appearance Friday morning

The sheriff told Channel 9 that Nicholas stabbed his father Thursday afternoon during a dispute at their home on Tomes Road, just off of Buffalo Shoals Road.

Chopper 9 arrived over the home and saw it roped off with crime scene tape.

Deputies arrived at the house and found the father lying outside in the front doorway. He had been stabbed in the upper body and head, according to the sheriff.

He was taken to Carolinas Healthcare System-Lincoln, where he later died. It's at that same hospital that Oswald Lynch was a well-respected hospital employee.
