CHARLOTTE, N.C. — From Chopper 9 Skyzoom, you could see gaping holes that still remained in the roof of the SouthPark Mall on Tuesday afternoon. You could also actually see inside the stores, where workers have erected scaffolding and are now trying to repair the damage.
Half of the mall has been closed since Friday, when part of the roof collapsed.
Simon Properties planned to open most of the remaining stores Tuesday, then posted an update to its Facebook page Monday night, saying “no additional stores will be opening tomorrow at this time.”
Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement made the decision to keep parts of the mall closed again Tuesday.
On Tuesday, Charlotte Code Enforcement said the closed stores can open Wednesday morning, except 240 feet around where the collapse happened, by Gap and Banana Republic.
In the meantime, frustrated workers were posting on SouthPark Mall’s Facebook page. One manager said she is about to run out of supplies because her deliveries are being turned away. Another needed access to a closed store for a corporate visit.
Officials said there are emergency plans in place to prevent another collapse.
