CHARLOTTE — Some teachers within Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be reassigned to other schools to help with staffing needs, district officials said.
In a statement to Channel 9, district representatives said that as of Thursday, no teachers have been moved but reassignments will happen in the coming weeks.
Officials said transferring school staff is part of a normal process CMS conducts annually based on student enrollment.
The process begins after the first few weeks of school, when district leaders review staff levels within schools, CMS said. They may make necessary adjustments by moving staff members from schools with more staff than needed to schools with vacancies. They might also move the surplus staff to schools where student enrollment has increased beyond the original projections, officials said.
For the 2021-2022 school year, the process will also include reassigning staff to “support the virtual schools and relieve the waitlist and to staff the soon-to-be-offered K-2 virtual school,” CMS officials said.
Staff in schools with lower-than-projected attendance levels may be transferred to other schools with overcrowded classrooms, CMS told Channel 9.
“It is important to note that we still have teacher and staff vacancies, and no teachers have been laid off or otherwise been separated from employment with CMS, and there are no plans to lay off teachers this school year,” CMS officials said.
