ATLANTA — Some airlines will soon have special bags on board to prevent a potential disaster in case a passenger’s device catches fire during the flight.
At least three airlines are adding fire containment bags. The bright red bags are made of a fire-resistant material and are designed to hold electronic devices, like phones or laptops, which can sometimes overheat and catch fire. The bags can withstand temperatures up to 3,200 degrees Faherenheit.
Alaska Airlines and Virgin America has already installed the new equipment, while Delta Airlines announced Thursday that it would add the bags to its planes.
American Airlines, whose second largest hub is at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, has not revealed any plans to add the bags to its flights.
The bags have been added after incidents occurred involving the Samsung Galaxy Note 7’s catching fire and exploding. Samsung decided to stop production of the phone altogether after replacement phones had the same issue.
The U.S. Department of Transportation, the FAA and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration issued an emergency order Friday to ban all Samsung Galaxy Note 7 smartphones from air transportation in the U.S.
