MORGANTON, N.C. — A 2.7-magnitude earthquake was recorded about 3.5 miles north of Morganton around 9:19 a.m. Tuesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey website.
A map on the USGS website that logs reports from residents who felt the earthquake indicated people in Lenoir and Hickory also felt the tremor.

Capt. Jason Whisnant with the Morganton Department of Public Safety told the Hickory Daily Record that no reports of damage had come in about 30 minutes after the earthquake.
Earthquakes of 2.5 magnitudes or less are usually not felt but officials said they can be recorded by a seismograph.
The largest earthquake in the area (magnitude 5.1) occurred in 1916, and the second largest happened in 2020.
