KERSHAW, S.C. — Former Solicitor Doug Barfield was injured in a shooting Wednesday night, according to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 8 p.m., police received a call regarding a shooting on North Matson Street in Kershaw.

At the scene, police found a man with an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital and is expected to recover.

The man was later identified as Doug Barfield, an employee of the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office. He also served as the sixth circuit solicitor from 2006 through 2014.

According to a police report obtained by Channel 9, Barfield was shot after a “verbal altercation” involving the suspect and another person. The suspect was identified as Tyrone Gilford.

The police report says Gilford chased the person down N. Matson Street and started firing shots at the same time that Barfield was driving down the street. Two rounds hit the front windshield of Barfield’s vehicle and hit him in the arm.

The person being chased by Gilford wasn’t hit by the gunfire, police said.

“It is a scary feeling knowing one of your own has been hurt, and we are extremely grateful that Doug’s injuries are not life-threatening,” said Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile. “We are thankful for all the other law enforcement agencies and first responder services that came to assist. Both the agency and the Barfield family are appreciative of everyone who has reached out to offer their thoughts and prayers.”

According to police, Barfield was off duty and not on official business at the time of the shooting.

Due to his employment with the sheriff’s office, the investigation into this case will be handled by the State Law Enforcement Division.

Gilford was arrested and faces charges of assault and attempted murder.
