SLED investigates inmate death at York County Detention Center

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death of an inmate at the York County Detention Center.

York County deputies said the inmate was found unresponsive in his cell around 7 p.m. on Friday.

Medical personnel were unable to resuscitate the inmate.

Officials said the inmate was charged by the Rock Hill Police Department on March 17 for shoplifting. He was then charged for possession of marijuana and contraband in a jail on April 6. Deputies said the inmate was transported back to the Rock Hill Police Department Tuesday for a court hearing and then returned to the York County Detention Center the same day.

Officials have not released the cause of death.
