CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A road in north Charlotte is still closed after a water main break caused a massive sinkhole that swallowed more than one lane of David Cox Road on Thursday.
Charlotte Water hoped to have the road back open by 8 p.m. Saturday.
Officials said they are finishing up repairs and then will put a temporary cover over the road before repaving it on Monday.

A north Charlotte road is still shut down Friday, more than 24 hours after a water main break caused a massive sinkhole to open.
David Cox Road likely won't be reopened until Saturday evening, when repairs are finished.
The incident happened around 3 a.m. Thursday and shut down David Cox Road at Sugar Creek Road.
On Thursday morning, water could be seen gushing from the road, which peeled open a massive sinkhole, spilling water out like a waterfall.
Charlotte Water said several factors could have caused the break but recent warm temperatures are likely to blame.
Officials turned off the water in hopes of stopping further damage. They said a 12-inch break caused the eastbound lanes of David Cox Road to collapse.
Crews blocked the road and had to dig a large hole in the pavement in order to reach and repair the break.
There could be various causes for the break, but one of them is the extremely hot weather. Several days this week have been a few degrees above average.
Charlotte Water said temperature changes can cause the ground to expand and contract, putting pressure on pipes.
No customers are without water because of the break.

There was another water main break Thursday on Independence Boulevard.
Crews there said they wouldn’t start repairing the break until 7 p.m.
Data shows the number of repairs to broken water mains has gone up by 27 percent since 2014.
