MATTHEWS, N.C. — Matthews police are looking for whoever shot into a car during the busy morning commute along Interstate 485 on Tuesday.
Officers responded just after 7 a.m. to the outer loop of I-485 near Idlewild Road for reports of someone shooting into a vehicle.

According to police, the victim, a 60-year-old man from Matthews, said he was driving on the outer loop of I-485 and passing underneath the Stallings Road Bridge when the driver of a gray sedan fired several shots into his car from the lane beside him.
The victim was hurt by shattered glass from the shooting but is expected to be OK. He said the gunfire was unexpected and unprovoked.
“I thought, ‘Oh my God, he was shooting at me.’ They were shooting at me,” he said. “I was terrified.”
He said the suspect’s car drove up behind him very quickly with its high beams on. That was when he heard two to three loud pops, and once he realized someone had shot his car, he saw broken windows and bullet holes.
“I started checking my body. I started feeling around to see if I was hurt,” he said. “I didn’t do anything to deserve this -- I was just a guy going to work.”
Police told Channel 9 they are investigating the shooting as a case of road rage.
The victim said he is grateful to have survived and is pleading that someone else out on the road with him can help catch the shooter who nearly killed him.
“I would only hope they would come forward and say something about it because I don’t want this to happen to anyone else,” he said.
Anyone in the area during the incident or anyone with information is asked to email Detective Lori Valdes or call 704-841-6717 as soon as possible.
